On April 24, Signature HealthCARE of Columbia broke the World Record for longest wheelchair race, with 205 wheelchairs. The record was previously held by the Christopher Reeve Foundation, with 193 wheelchairs. Local radio station WXRQ was on hand broadcasting live from the parade, and WSMV-TV (channel 4) featured the event on its six o’clock newscast. The Columbia Daily Herald also published a front-page article.

On Wednesday, Oct. 10, Signature HealthCARE hosted its second annual Senior Olympics games for nine Signature nursing homes across Kentucky. About 60 nursing home residents competed in the games, and a total of about 200 people attended. Celebrity judges included Bellarmine University men’s basketball coach Scotty Davenport, famed sports writer Billy Reed and Roger Burkman, who played for the University of Louisville and the Chicago Bulls.
Yesterday a lovely group of young girls from Calvary Church in Cordova came to visit the residents. Some helped with manicures, some sang songs and shared stories. It was a successful afternoon filled with fun, laughter, stories and memories that will last a lifetime. We cannot wait for them to come back!
Some of our residents have recently taken a liking to the game of dominoes, and it’s become quite the popular game as you can see from the photos below. What started out as a once a week activity involving 4 ladies has grown to a co-ed activity that happens 3 or more times per week! We allow the residents access to them at all times and encourage them to play even when it’s not scheduled on the calendar. This is stimulating for their minds and also encourages then to build relationships with residents they would not have otherwise associated.
Recently we have had the privilege of honoring one of our very own nurses for Signature HealthCARE’s Nurse of the Year Award. Barbara Kelly, L.P.N. , says “I feel very blessed to be selected as Nurse of the Year for Signature Healthcare. Over the past 10 years, Signature has given me many opportunities to make a difference in the lives of our residents. Working for a company with vision and passion is what keeps me excited about being a nurse in Long Term Care…….Our open interfaith environment makes me feel proud to work for Signature and is a powerful tool in binding us together as a family.” Not only is Barbara our Restorative Nursing Director, but she is also actively involved in activity programs, such as our cooking class and card making with the residents. We are so blessed to have Barbara as a member of our team and are so proud of her accomplishments at SHC of Memphis.
Signature HealthCARE was prominently featured in a front-page story The Courier-Journal (Louisville’s daily paper) published this week about spirituality in the workplace. To read the article, click HERE.
This year’s Hall of Fame was a little different than those past. We had the privilege of honoring four male residents this year, all with very different stories. A brilliant engineer, a generous grocery store owner, a veteran and harmonica player, and a film industry agent who could ride a bicycle backwards were among some of their accomplishments. We also were proud to honor a very special stakeholder who started his career at SHC of Memphis as a CNA and is now one of our Physical Therapists. He is the perfect example of how Signature Healthcare helps stakeholders to achieve thier goals. Last but not least our community inductee, Director of Religious Education from St. Agnes Academy and St. Dominics School, who has helped us to provide intergenerational programming such as BRIDGES and Day of Caring.
The night was filled with fun and good food provided by Chef Stanley and his crew. Many attending danced the night away to the musical talents of The Beverly Brothers. It was a successful event as stakeholders, residents, families and community leaders came together to honor the deserving inductees into the 2012 Hall of Fame at Signature HealthCARE of Memphis.
Our very own Quality of Life Assistant,Rebecca Shaeffer, was surprised by residents and stakeholders with a baby shower for her first baby, Austin Ryan Shaeffer. We are so blessed to work with such a talented, caring, driven individual like Rebecca. We wish her well on her journey into motherhood and look forward to meeting Austin!
